Kyogo Furuhashi has struggled for form at Birmingham City as rumours of a potential Celtic return continue to float around.

That’s compared to the 85 goals he scored in 165 appearances at the Hoops.

There has been talk of a return to Glasgow, but whether the club or Wilfried Nancy have any concrete interest remains to be seen. Birmingham boss Chris Davies, who was Celtic’s assistant under Brendan Rodgers, has admitted that the Japanese forward is ‘frustrated’ as he looks to end his goal drought.

Speaking to Birmingham Live, Davies said:

“It has been a frustration for Kyogo, a frustration for himself more than anyone else, and I can see that in him.

“He really wanted to come here, play regularly, score goals and get back in that Japan squad after a difficult few months in France.

“It was only a few months because he was still doing great at Celtic before he went off there.”

He added: “Going back to the stat about the amount of chances we’ve created, he’s had quite a few of those and someone told me that in terms of big chances created in the league he is up there as well.

“And he hasn’t capitalised on those chances. He knows that, I’ve told him that he needs to take those chances and moments.

“He’s good enough to do it, he’s shown that, but he needs to go and make it happen now. No one else is going to do it for him, he needs to do it himself.”

Kyogo left Celtic for Ligue 1 side Stade Rennes in January 2025, but lasted just six months before his move to Birmingham.

It has been a strange turn in form for the forward, given the prolific spells he enjoyed at the Hoops as well as back in Japan with Vissel Kobe.

With the World Cup fast approaching, Kyogo could eye a move away in hopes of securing a seat on the plane.

A return to Celtic has certainly sparked debate. Would going back to another player be seen as ‘lazy’, or would the move suit both parties as Nancy looks to strengthen his side in attack?
